Efficiency, Technical Progress, and Best Practice

چکیده
Based on a sample of about 600 state enterprises from 1980 to 1994, this paper investigates the productivity performance of SOEs using Data Envelopment Analysis and a Malmquist index. Our empirical results show that the average technical efficiency was low for these firms. Considerable productivity growth was found, but it was accomplished mainly through technical progress rather than through efficiency improvement. Regression analyses indicate that large SOEs were more likely to generate productivity growth than smaller ones. The best practice firms were most likely to be found among large enterprises located in the well-developed costal province. Wage incentives and education had positive impacts on productivity growth. Capacity utilization had a significant short-run effect on productivity through efficiency improvement. Journal of Economic Literature Classification Numbers: D24, P31

Efficiency , Technical Progress , and Best Practice in Chinese State Enterprises ( 1980 - 1994 )
In spite of rapid economic growth and swift structural change during the last two decades, China’s industrial reform is far from complete, especially with regard to state enterprises (SOEs). Although troubled with huge financial losses, heavy debt, and substantial over-staffing, SOEs will continue to play a crucial part in the government policy to maintain social stability and economic growth i...
متن کاملTotal Factor Productivity Growth, Technical Change and Technical Efficiency Change in Asian Economies: Decomposition Analysis
The aim of this paper is to analyze total factor productivity (TFP) growth and its components in Asian countries applying Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) to the time series data of 44 Asian countries from 2000 to 2010. Using Battese and Coelli approach, TFP is divided into technical efficiency change and technical change. TFP decomposition using SFA method for the years 1998 to 2007 indicate...
متن کاملEstimating the Technical Improvement of Energy Efficiency in the Automotive Industry—Stochastic and Deterministic Frontier Benchmarking Approaches
The car manufacturing industry, one of the largest energy consuming industries, has been making a considerable effort to improve its energy intensity by implementing energy efficiency programs, in many cases supported by government research or financial programs. While many car manufacturers claim that they have made substantial progress in energy efficiency improvement over the past years thro...
متن کاملHigher education, technical efficiency and total productivity changes: evidence from Iran's manufacturing industries
The purpose of this article was to estimate the effect of higher education on total productivity changes and technical efficiency in the 4-digit classification code of ISIC in Iran during the period of 1994-04. In this regard, a two-way stage approach was used. In the first stage, Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) and technical efficiency index by Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Stochastic...
متن کاملPartitioning Input Cost Efficiency into Its Allocative and Technical Components. an Empirical Dea Application to Hospitals
The study presents an empirical analysis of best practice production and cost frontiers for a sample of 94 acute care hospitals by applying Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and a regression model, in a two-stage approach. This paper contributes to the DEA and efficiency measurement literatures by adding results from a homogeneous method of partitioning cost efficiency into its allocative (or pri...
